We’re back!

After a small hiatus whilst the leak in the theatre at St Vincent College was fixed, and the renovation work on the organ at Thorngate Halls was completed, we are delighted to be back with an exciting programme of screenings for autumn 2025.

Our unique programme celebrates cinema. Every screening, we’ll introduce the film with a talk highlighting the film’s importance, context and style.

See what’s on this autumn below.

The Searchers (PG) + talk

As a Civil War veteran spends years searching for a young niece captured by Indians, his motivation becomes increasingly questionable.

Civil war veteran Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) vows to track down his surviving relatives and bring them home following a raid on his brother’s home by the Comanche. The latest in our series featuring the greatest films of all time, John Ford’s classic western will be introduced with a discussion about the film’s significance.

Thursday 9th October 2025, 7pm

Hocus Pocus (PG) Women & Girls only !

Three witches are resurrected after 300 years to exact revenge and begin a reign of terror after Max, a young boy who moves to Salem with his family, lights the cursed Candle of Black Flame.

This screening is a collaboration with the Temple of Venus, a growing Gosport based group dedicated to women and girls. This is a follow up event to their highly successful art show in September.

The event will begin with fun and games at 7pm with the film starting around 7.45pm. The evening is planned as a pyjama party so feel free to come along in your PJs, onesies and dressing gowns. It can get a bit chilly in our theatre so you might want to bring a blanket too.

In line with the aims of the group, this is a screening for women and girls only so if you are considering attending, please do so with respect for this intention. Witches only, no wizards allowed!

Thursday 23rd October 2025, 7pm

The Navigator (U) + talk

The film that catapulted Buster Keaton to stardom, presented at Thorngate Halls with live organ accompaniment.

Buston Keaton’s silent classic was one of his biggest box office hits and was reputedly his favourite of his own films. The screening will be preceded by a short talk and we are also delighted to welcome David Ivory back to the Thorngate Halls to accompany the film on the newly renovated Compton theatre organ.

Thursday 13th November 2025, 7.30pm at Thorngate Halls, Bury Road, Gosport, PO12 3QX

Singing in the Rain (U) + talk

When silent film star Don Lockwood’s latest picture is re-written as a talkie, he must solve the problem of his co-star’s grating voice.

The greatest of the classic Hollywood musicals is the perfect Christmas treat. When silent film star Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) finds his latest picture re-written as a talkie, he needs to solve the problem of his co-star’s grating, high-pitched voice. The film will be preceded by a talk discussing why the film merits its place in the Sight and Sound greatest films of all time poll.

Thursday 11th December 2025, 7pm

You can book tickets for all films on EventBrite, or buy them on the door (we can take payment by card or cash).

For those who regularly use Eventbrite for tickets, the site is changing the way they deliver tickets and these will now need to be accessed via the Eventbrite app (or by logging in to the Eventbrite website), rather than being emailed to you as a PDF. Do rest assured however, we will always have a list at our “box office” of those who have purchased tickets from Eventbrite and we can check you off our list at the door if there are any issues.

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming screenings. Thank you so much for supporting your local community cinema!
